  Zoey X Huntress

Slight trigger warning.

----------------

Out of everything regarding this infection, or in more blunt terms the very near extinction of the human race, Zoey hated the nights by far the most. Sure she was inside of a reinforced safe-house, strong metal walls and doors making sure nothing could just wander inside, instead it was these hours of laying in bed, having to use earphones and music to block out the distant sounds of crazed infected that take a toll on one's sanity. To lie there all alone with absolutely nothing left in this world she held dear.

Hours passed and Zoey eventually got out of bed with an annoyed, frustrated sigh. By now she was wondering just how long the human body could actually survive without sleep, then again she no longer feared death. Despite her resilience, it had been years since she last saw another survivor and she nowadays often found herself aiming her trusted handgun to her own temple, always edging closer to pulling the trigger...

After taking her earphones out and rising up would she yawn soundly and stagger towards the bathroom, on auto-pilot as always in the morning, there was nothing different about today anyway she convinced herself.
It was such a small little thing, but she caught herself brushing her teeth before the mirror, just that one normal thing causing her to show a weary smile, the minty taste so familiar as it reminded her of the old days, when the world hadn't gone to absolute shit... When she was still eating her mother's home-cooked dinners...

Leaning forth she spat the refreshing, frothy toothpaste into the sink and then washed her face, attempting to bring even the slightest more life into her dull, green eyes.
Eventually Zoey wandered back to the bed and got dressed, putting on a pair of military-style trousers and a black tank-top before checking her notes to see what was needed doing, and with scavenging highest on the list did she emit a sound groan.

It didn't take her long to get ready despite making a trip that would take a couple of hours, all she needed was her backpack, leather jacket, gloves, flashlight, handgun and some canned fruits in her belly before simply heading out. If anything, these years of experience have honed her combat capability to an insane level. In the past she needed companions just to survive, but now she herself was a force to be reckoned with.

At first, the common infected were a growing problem, but after a couple of months their numbers just started rapidly diminishing as they didn't feed on wildlife like the special infected did and eventually they just began dropping dead everywhere. At first there was that strong smell of decomposing flesh, but given enough time did nature begin to thrive among the corpses, leaving only skeletons in the thick flowerbeds.

Zoey however had no time to admire scenery, instead she focused on her task and already found herself going through cabinets at a nearby house that she hadn't checked out before, out to find anything preserved that could have lasted this long. With some luck she managed to find a bunch of canned beans in a remarkably still working freezer along with a few whole packages of beef jerky strips, a bit of a ordinary find after the stores were ravaged of their goods. She shoved the goods into her backpack until it was bulging and headed back out back into the open.

A not so distant growl however stopped the eighteen year old right in her tracks in a park, placing her hand over her holster as she focused on her surroundings. The lack of sleep had made her dull, but she was far from unprepared. She waited patiently where she stood her ground and slowly pulled the straps of her backpack off her shoulders and let it down on the grass for now.

Minutes passed and Zoey had caught glimpses of today's problem. She recognized it as a hunter from the hoodie it wore but she had yet to even pull out her handgun and begin firing. Again and again she heard the creature growl, every single time causing Zoey to wrinkle her brow as the growl itself just sounded strangely high pitched... This time she heard it from right behind her, knowing from the start that it would try to attack her from her blind-spot.

A few moments of silence passed, and then suddenly the hunter emitted a roar and lounged forth at high speeds towards the survivor's back, hoping for a tasty meal but was instead rammed face first into the grass a second later. Having given itself away had Zoey simply spun and grasped the hunter's wrist, twisting it's entire arm whilst she let the creature land head first on the grass and then to have Zoey's heavy boot pressed against it's back to keep it from getting back up.

"Heh, not so tough now are y-" Zoey started, but was interrupted as her eyes went wide, never before had she heard an infected show signs of pain before, much less emit such a pained, panicked shriek. If she hadn't steeled herself at the last moment had she backed off and let the hunter go, but instead she remained, trying to comprehend what just happened. She hadn't even felt a crack from the hunter's arm, so it wasn't broken or even dislocated, even the ground it had landed on was soft compared to asphalt or concrete...

Curious she couldn't help but quickly grasp the hunter's other flailing arm with her free hand, doing her best to keep the squirming and growling creature in place as she quickly lifted her boot up and got down on-top of the hunter's back, straddling it to further keep the beast-like infected in place. "Keep still would you!" She shouted, only needing a moment. Despite the creature's strength was she eventually able to clench both it's wrists together with one hand before she quickly reached down to her holster with the other, pulling her handgun out, guiding it and then firing a single round right next to the hunter's head, straight into the grass, the only noises remaining after that being the panting Zoey.

Before the echo of the gunshot even stopped had the hunter turned limp. Without having physically gotten hurt had the sheer amount of decibels from shot along with the hunter's sensitive hearing knocked it unconscious.
Zoey's chest was by now rising and falling as she sucked in deep breaths and exhaled rapidly, despite the danger was this by far the most exciting and fun she had had this week... Holstering her handgun again did she then curiously grip the top of the hunter's hoodie which covered it's face, it wasn't often she'd see another's face after all, and even if infected it did give her some comfort, surprisingly...

What Zoey saw however after having tugged the hood down, gotten off the infected and rolled it onto it's back was an absolute shock to her. "W-What..." She started in the tone of a whisper, swallowing hard as she first saw the infected woman's face past the straight, black hair. The peaceful look she wore defied everything Zoey thought about the normally gruesome and savage hunters... Taking off her tough gloves did Zoey slowly reach out and cup the huntress's cheeks, feeling the softness and smoothness of the infected's skin... But what surprised her the most was the hint of a smile that suddenly showed on the infected's dark lips...

----------------

Six hours later.

----------------

Even now Zoey had no idea whether she had made a good decision or not, she just hadn't been able to off the huntress after properly seeing her, and she couldn't just leave her be seeing as she'd attack again... So instead Zoey had gotten the brilliant idea to drag her back to the safe house... At least she had been smart enough to place the unconscious huntress on her own bed before putting padded cuffs on her wrists connected to the two separate metal posts at the top corners of the bed, seeing as she'd wreak havoc otherwise. Which was a pretty spot-on guess. For the last thirty minutes had Zoey watched the huntress shriek, growl and strain against the cuffs holding her, trying desperately to escape to no avail. Once she finally settled with simply growling and giving Zoey a hateful scowl could she not help but snicker, she felt a bit bad for doing this to the huntress but decided to see where this would take her. She couldn't sleep anyway so she didn't mind the shrieks.

Standing up from the chair she had been seated on would she now wander up right next to the huntress's form, despite the sheer tension in the air did she smile and hold out a long strip of dried meat "Will you be good?" She asked the growling, unresponsive huntress, swaying the strip right before her nose to try and catch her attention, but once she took the bait and just immediately snapped at the piece, trying to snatch it was it simply brought out of reach of her mouth. "Again. Will you be good?" Zoey continued, teasingly holding onto the strip as she listened to the growling slowly lowering in volume until it came to a complete stop, leaving only the hateful scowl and glaring ruby eyes staring at her. "Good enough." Zoey emitted with a renewed smile, this time letting the huntress bite right into the piece and eagerly devour it, letting it go before she'd risk losing fingers.

Whilst distracted by the jerky had Zoey's agile fingers managed to pry a wallet from the huntress's torn, dirty jeans, the layers of dirt and grime seemingly the only thing holding it together. She stepped out of the room for now to give the huntress the comfort of solitude, resting her back against the nearby wall as she carefully flipped through the wallet, eventually managing to pull out the only thing not completely destroyed, a driver's license which she really had to squint her eyes to read the faded letters and numbers. Eventually she emitted a soft giggle, placing the license down on a cabinet as she stepped away, pulling out a sleeping bag for herself as she stopped by the door to the other bedroom. "Good night, Zoe." She called before turning off the lights and closing the door, moving to the couch in the old living room.
For once Zoey was absolutely certain that these repetitive days had come to an end.
I had written up a very, very short explanation of this scenario a long time back and decided I'd give a try at writing again.
It was my intention to try a one-shot, but I apparently suck at ending things early.

As the first part of the title says, this was a test, mainly to see if I still knew how to write properly. To me it all looks extremely stiff.
Reviews anyone? Pretty please with sugar on-top? ^^;

(Also, there is no real fluff in this story!)
